My Brother Taught Me Women’s Rights
3 lessons my brother has taught a young woman to voice out and ask for what is rightfully hers.
This is not a melancholy aim to make you lose hope in humanity. This is simply an effort to share how the seeds of support can bloom into flower of confidence for women. I hope that if you are a woman and is struggling with becoming yourself, you can find your voice after reading this. And if you are a man, I hope this can help you understand more about the women you love and how to help them bloom fully.
A bit of context on my brother — he is the most active feminist I know. In our East Asian culture, very little time women are equal to men. We are told that being smarter than our men counterparts will lead to domestic unhappiness. We are prone to be the victims of infidelity, harassment, and abuse. We are told, “men will be men”.
But my brother thinks differently. As the elder child, he has been a great mentor for me to make myself becoming the woman I want: to speak with fierceness not fear, and to act with grace not obedience. So without further ado, here are the 3 lessons he has taught me about women’s rights and most importantly — how to voice out for your own rights.
